How to pass Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam) and Etablererprøven (Restaurant operator exam): A simple study plan

Short sessions make it easier to get started and understand what you are learning.

1. Find the right exam

If you will be the general manager of a food service establishment, Etablererprøven (Restaurant operator exam) is relevant to you. If you will be the styrer or stedfortreder for alcohol service, Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam) is relevant to you. Some roles require both. Clarify the requirements with the municipality before choosing a course.

2. Study one topic at a time

Set aside a short study session that you have time to complete. Read about one topic and stop when you come across something you do not understand. Write down important terms and rules in your own words. You do not need to learn everything at once.

3. Practise and learn from the answers

Try questions on what you have just read. A wrong answer shows you what you can practise more. Read the explanation, revisit the topic and try again. Understanding why the answer is correct is more important than remembering the position of an answer option.

4. Test yourself before exam day

Once you have worked through the topics, you can take a timed practice exam. Review your mistakes afterwards and revisit anything you are unsure about. The result indicates what you know; it is not a guarantee that you will pass the official exam.

Sources and official information

The information is based on official sources. Information from Oslo is used as local examples. Always check current requirements, fees and application procedures with your own municipality and the relevant authority.

The official test is taken in Norwegian. Always check the current rules and practical information with your municipality.
