What is Kunnskapsprøven i alkoholloven (Alcohol law exam)?
Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam) tests your knowledge of the alcohol rules that apply to the licence. This guide covers the exam for on-premises service: alcohol consumed at the licensed premises. As a general rule, the styrer and stedfortreder must have passed this exam. You take the official exam with the municipality, not with TestPrep.
Who needs this knowledge?
As a general rule, the styrer and stedfortreder for a skjenkebevilling must have passed Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam). There are separate exams for alcohol sales and alcohol service. TestPrep’s course focuses on alcohol service. Check with the municipality that you are registering for the correct exam.
What should you practise?
Learn about age limits, permitted alcohol serving hours, ID checks and handling guests who are clearly intoxicated. Also read about the responsibilities of the styrer and stedfortreder. The aim is not just to memorise an answer, but to understand how the rules apply at work.
How many questions are there, and how many correct answers are required?
Kunnskapsprøven for skjenking (Alcohol law exam for on-premises service) has 30 multiple-choice questions. You have 60 minutes and must answer at least 24 questions correctly. These requirements are stated by Oslo kommune. A practice exam can help you practise managing your time, but TestPrep's questions are practice questions, not the municipality's exam questions.
Learn the rules through workplace scenarios
Think about what you would do if a guest has no ID, or if a guest becomes visibly intoxicated. Find the applicable rule and explain why it matters. Connecting the syllabus to a specific situation makes it easier to understand your responsibilities and remember what to do.
Where do you take the official exam?
Contact the municipality for registration, pricing and practical information. The official exam must be taken in Norwegian. Practising with TestPrep does not replace the official exam or the licence application.
Can you practise for Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam) for free?
Yes. At TestPrep, you can try five practice questions on serving alcohol for free, without an account or payment card. Read the explanation after each answer and review the topics you are unsure about. The full course costs 479 kr as a one-time purchase (regular price 599 kr) and is sold separately from Etablererprøven (Restaurant operator exam). Payments are not available yet, and the municipality's exam fee is not included.
Syllabus for serving alcohol: use the right level of knowledge
Helsedirektoratet’s commentary on alkoholforskriften § 5-4 describes what you must have knowledge of and what you must be familiar with. Use it as a guide to the syllabus, rather than a random list of alcohol-related questions. Familiarise yourself with the rules on serving alcohol, responsible roles, age limits, obviously intoxicated guests and inspections. The exam for retail alcohol sales is a different version from the exam for serving alcohol.
Styrer and stedfortreder: plan for both roles
As a general rule, an ordinary skjenkebevilling must have an approved styrer and stedfortreder. Both must normally be at least 20 years old and document their knowledge by passing the appropriate version of Kunnskapsprøven. The municipality assesses their approval. A course certificate does not replace an exam certificate or approval for the role. Clarify who will actually be responsible before the business books places.
Example: the guest is obviously intoxicated
A guest appears obviously intoxicated and wants to buy more alcohol. You must not serve them any more. First explain which rule applies, then look at the business’s procedures for handling the situation. The aim is to apply the knowledge in practice, not just remember an answer option. This is a teaching example from TestPrep, not an official exam question.
Sources and official information
The information is based on official sources. Information from Oslo is used as local examples. Always check current requirements, fees and application procedures with your own municipality and the relevant authority.
