Check registration details with the municipality

Find information about the exam on the municipality’s website, or contact the municipality. Check which exam you need to take, where it is held, available dates and how to pay. The price of a TestPrep course does not include the municipality’s exam fee.

Learn the key terms in Norwegian

The official exam in your municipality must be taken in Norwegian. If you prepare in another language, you should also learn the Norwegian terms for important rules and roles. Practise reading the entire question before choosing an answer.

Read the confirmation you receive

Check the time, venue, ID requirements and which aids are allowed. Follow the information provided by the municipality. If you need special arrangements, ask the municipality well in advance about the options available.

Give yourself a calm start

Plan your journey and arrive in plenty of time. Read the questions carefully and use the time available to you. If you do not pass, you can ask the municipality about registering again and use your result to plan further practice.

Choose the exam before booking an appointment

Choose Etablererprøven if you need to document your knowledge as the general manager of a food or drink establishment. For a styrer or stedfortreder for a skjenkebevilling, Kunnskapsprøven for serving alcohol is the relevant exam. Check that you have not selected the retail sales exam by mistake. TestPrep’s city pages direct you to the municipality’s own information about registration, exam venues and exam fees.

Permitted aids: the exams may have different rules

Oslo kommune states that a dictionary is permitted in Kunnskapsprøven, but not in Etablererprøven. According to the municipality’s information, both are conducted in Norwegian, without an interpreter. This is a local example. Read the rules and attendance confirmation from the municipality where you will take the exam, and ask before exam day if you need accommodations.

After the exam: keep your documentation

Once you have passed, keep the documentation you receive. It may be relevant to an application for a licence or approval for a responsible role. Passing the exam is not the licence itself. If you do not pass, ask the municipality about registering again and the fee, and use the time before your next attempt to review the topics you are unsure about.

Sources and official information

The information is based on official sources. Information from Oslo is used as local examples. Always check current requirements, fees and application procedures with your own municipality and the relevant authority.
