In brief: serving food or serving alcohol?
Etablererprøven (Restaurant operator exam) covers running a food and drink business and is relevant for the general manager of an establishment that requires a serveringsbevilling. Kunnskapsprøven i alkoholloven (Alcohol law exam) covers alcohol regulations and is generally required for the styrer and stedfortreder for a skjenkebevilling. The two exams cover different areas of responsibility and do not replace each other.
When might you need both exams?
If you will be both the general manager of a food service establishment and the styrer or stedfortreder for its skjenkebevilling, both exams may be relevant. The requirements depend on your role and the business, not just on whether you own the restaurant. Describe your plans to the municipality before registering or buying a course.
serveringsbevilling is not the same as skjenkebevilling
A serveringsbevilling and a skjenkebevilling are different licences. Passing an exam documents your knowledge, but does not automatically give you the right to open a food and drink establishment or serve alcohol. The municipality assesses the licence application and the other requirements that apply to the business.
Choose the right version of Kunnskapsprøven (Alcohol law exam)
There are different knowledge exams for alcohol sales and alcohol service. Sales means that the alcohol is taken away to be consumed elsewhere. Service means that it is consumed on the licensed premises. TestPrep’s course focuses on alcohol service, not the sales exam. Check the name of the exam when you register.
